CFOs love plans. Budgets. Forecasts. Scenarios. Plan B. And preferably Plan C as well. But recent years have had a strange habit of throwing things at us that weren’t in any of the scenarios.
So what then?
What happens to our ability to act when what we could have anticipated comes to an end? It is precisely at this point that improvisation begins. Not as an acting technique. Not as the ability to ‘get out of a tight spot’. And certainly not as a rejection of planning.
Improvisation is the ability to quickly perceive a new reality, not to freeze when things don’t go to plan, and to start acting within the new circumstances.
And not just to adapt to circumstances, but to create them in order to achieve one’s goals.
It is precisely this skill that we will be exploring in a masterclass with Yuriy Klyatskin – a director, actor and creator of a system for developing adaptive intelligence and a methodology for theatrical improvisation.
He has 24 years of practical experience to his name, having founded the Improvisation School and the immersive theatre ‘Potik’, 15 years’ work as an actor, director, teacher and studio manager at the ‘Black Square’ Theatre, as well as his role as an improvisation coach and director for the 7th, 8th and 9th seasons of the ‘League of Laughter’.
What will we be practising?
– acting without hesitation when a situation changes mid-process;
– thinking more quickly and reacting more accurately;
– feeling more confident when communicating and in public situations;
– working with fear and uncertainty rather than avoiding them;
– spotting opportunities where the original plan no longer works.
And most importantly – this time, we’ll be focusing less on talking about the skill and more on experiencing it.
70–80 per cent of the session will be practical exercises.
A game-based format, plenty of interaction and a safe space for experimentation.
Because a good plan remains important.
But perhaps one of the most important skills today is knowing what to do once the plan has stopped working.
In a world of change, it is not those who make plans doomed to failure who succeed, but those who know how to improvise.
